Tamarind rice is one of the most traditional South Indian rice and also known as Khatte chawal....Incredibly flavorful and fragrant pot of rice.....Sweet yet tangy,mildly spiced and temper with mustard seeds,curry leaves,nuts lentil and red chillies.This tangy rice is common Prasad at most of the South Indian temple.Each savored bites takes me back to the times when I used to visit Venkateshwara temple with my husband,The beautiful sculpture,the divine atomosphare And this yummy rice For Prasad and we would eagerly wait in the queue to get our Prasad of this rice.The tamarind rice offered there was so delicious that we would invariably go back for more.So now you can imagine how nostalgic this rice always makes me.
The taste and colour of this rice depends a lot on the quantity of tamarind.To get the best result clean and soak the tamarind in water for 2-3 hours.It will easier to get the pulp out.I generally prepare tamarind paste in advance then it is just a matter of minutes to turn plain white rice to tangy and yummy South Indian dish.So whenever you are feeling lazy or you have to make something in a jiffy then Make this rice and pair it with some poppadums and a bowl of fresh yogurt and you are going to fall in love with this healthy yummy dish....
Ingredients:
- Boiled rice-1cup
- Tamarind pulp-1/4 cup
- Olive oil-2ts
- Peanuts-1/4cup
- Jaggery-1medium size
- Dry red chillies-2
- Curry leaves-chopped
Procedure:
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds when seeds began to pop add urad dal,channa dal and peanuts.Saute on a low flame until lentils and peanuts turn golden .
- Then add dry red chillies ,curry leaves ,asafoetida and mix well.Add boiled rice and sauté for a while.Switchoff the flame.
- Now take tamarind pulp in the another pan and sauté for few seconds.
- Add jaggery powder ,salt and mix well.Simmer the mixture on a low flame.Cook till mixture has thickened a bit and you see oil floating on top.Switch off the flame.Cool it.
- Add this mixture to boiled rice by using a fork.Gently mix very well.
- Tamarind rice is ready to serve.
